The Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his full name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
