Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
